Establishing The Buddhist College
Spreading the Dharma is certainly not without its many trials and tribulations,
just as building monasteries and founding schools are not without their manifold obstacles.
Once in 1963, I was at Shou Shan Temple eagerly announcing plans to found a Buddhist college,
when an influential devotee tried to dampen my spirits, saying:
"Master! If you insist on a Buddhist college which we cannot hope to fund for the long term,
soon you will have to go without food."
In all honesty, we were extremely short on resources, but then in training the sangha,
I was just as convinced in that we could not afford to stand idle for a moment longer.
Not flinching in the least at any of the threats and warnings, I resolutely went ahead with my goals.
As a result, graduates from the Buddhist college have numbered in the thousands in the last forty years.
Those who enrolled early at the beginning, such as Tzu Chia, Tzu Yi, Yi Yen, Hsin Ting, Yi Heng, and Hsin Ju
have all distinguished themselves in their services at Fo Guang Shan.
If at any point I had been the slightest hesitant, many Buddhist leaders and fine talents would have been lost for no good reason at all.
