University Education
  University Of The West

Hsi Lai University Entrance.
Master:
"This is a university founded by Buddhism, not a Buddhist university."
The main purpose of the university is to respond to the trend and
needs of America's Multicultural society.
It is a bridge that links the Eastern and Western cultures.
Therefore, what has been established
is a modern international university with true prospects.
My expectations of Hsi Lai University:
Not just a school that teaches wisdom or knowledge, but one that:
Teaches students how to become upright persons,
Helps students cultivate good dispositions,
Transmits the spiritual ways, passes on ideals, and
Nurtures the sagely and virtuous.
~Extracts from The Diary of Master Hsing Yun
In July 2002, Hsi Lai University was granted Candidacy Status in the accreditation process of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). This means that the students will attain the recognition for credits or degrees of the University by other institutions and employers through out USA. (2002/7/15)

Venerable Master established Hsi Lai University (HLU) in Los Angeles, USA, 1991. Located in the City of Rosemead, Los Angeles County, California, the University was constructed over 10 acres of land. It is a university that integrates the humanities and the sciences, theory and practice, as well as the East and the West. It is a modern University in an exquisite setting which offers students the opportunity not merely to acquire knowledge and skills, but to develop a good personality founded on traditional virtues, so that they can embark on a bright career, on the one hand, and live a spiritually rich and peaceful life on the other hand. In 2002, HLU was granted Candidacy Status in the accreditation process of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), marking a stage of fruition for the first-ever university in the US to be established by a Chinese Buddhist organization.

Bird's Eye View of Fo Guang University(2002/9/18)

Build a University With One Hundred Dollars
Venerable Master initiated a Fo Guang University Million Member Fundraising Committee Movement. Gathering one million people to take part in the movement, each person who donates NT$100 once a month for three years is regarded as a University Construction Committee member.
Master: "Just as long as you put your heart into it, this one hundred dollars donated by you is a way to help others by benefitting them and promoting education. You are investing in your own education and helping your own spiritual cultivation. This way, the scope of your spirituality and life will surely be broadened."

Situated on Lin-mei Mountain in Chiaoshi, Fo Guang University (FGU) is the first University ever established in Ilan. Its groundbreaking ceremony took place in 1993, and countless human, material and monetary resources have been put in during the 7-year period of environmental impact assessments and miscellaneous works on Campus. The first construction phase of FGU began in March, 2000. When the University was opened in September in the same year, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to open 6 graduate schools to recruit Master's students. FGU was declared best in ten separate areas. Undergraduate courses were offered at the University two years later.

FGS Srimala Buddhist Institute

In order to provide spiritual guidance to modern women, FGS Srimala Buddhist College was founded in 1994. This program provides a chance for them to let go of all social commitments in order to revalue their lives and make a new plan for their future. As Srimala students, they have the chance to to go traveling in many countries and visit places of interest, thereby enhancing their understanding of different cultures. This kind of study broadens their mind and vision, thus inspiring them to learn from Madam Srimala's ten vows on how to benefit the society in order to actualize the Humanistic Buddhism.

The college offers a 4-month course for women with  age. For the first month, students will study at Fo Guang Shan monastery to learn Buddhist etiquette. They will later go to other countries for the following three months. Local linguistic and cultural courses will be arranged whenever they reach a foreign country.

Up till now, students of the Srimala Buddhist College have traveled to countries in Europe, America, Oceania, and Asia. After graduation, they may enter the Women's Buddhist College, served at any of the Fo Guang Shan branch temples, or go back into society with their newly gained knowledge in order to benefit others.
