The Value of Travel

Venerable Master Hsing Yun

Travel is very popular in modern society, which is beneficial for as the saying goes, "One should study ten thousand books and travel ten thousand miles of road." Not only can travel enrich our knowledge of geography, history, and culture, it can also provide an excellent opportunity to enjoy wonderful scenery and to enhance friendships with traveling companions.

Travel is a form of outdoor education; it is a means to expand one's view and world knowledge. It raises the quality of life and can promote trade between countries. However, it is a shame that some people travel just for sensual pleasure, or to gamble or seek physical thrills. Others indulge themselves in impulsive shopping, buying anything that appeals to them, thus winning themselves the notoriety of being a "shopping tourist." The purpose of travel should not be materialism but should instead be intellectual and moral cultivation. For example, when parents travel with their children, the purpose of travel should not be done for the sake of showing off, but on learning at the same time the family is having fun. Families should take the opportunity to expand their views and knowledge, meet people from diverse cultures, visit historical sites and famous places, and make new friends. Furthermore, children should be taught to serve others, to develop their own thinking, to cultivate good manners, and to conduct themselves well in public.

Tourism is the smokeless industry of every country; each country, without exception, should endeavor to develop this industry. Under these circumstances the number of travel agents can proliferate; and many people would be tempted to travel more by the increased number of tours to new, unusual, and interesting places. However, there are some unethical travel agents who do not provide their customers with quality tours, but instead cheat and scheme to make a profit. In doing so, not only do they ruin their own reputations and spoil the vacations of the visitors, they also blemish the image of their country.

Life is short, so we should manage time wisely in order to do more to benefit society, maximizing every minute and hour. That is one way to improve the quality and use of our time. In addition, we should also explore and expand our vistas by learning more about other people throughout the world. Traveling helps us to live quality lives by opening our eyes to new things, developing our ties to other people and places, improving our knowledge, and learning good manners. It is indeed a good means to develop the value of life. Whenever we travel, we should go with the intention of learning; that way, both our money and time are well spent.

After camping in the mountains and enduring the wilderness, we then realize the comfort of home. And if, after journeying for thousands of miles and taking in all the wonderful scenery, upon coming home we can realize our true natureˇXthis is the meaning and value of travel.
