Have you ever seen or read Journey to the West?
The Main Theme Lantern is based on Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s spring couplet for 2016, “Be Smart and Agile.” Spanning 21 meters wide and 18 meters high, it is one of the most spectacular in years. The Main Theme Lantern is dynamic and aesthetic, combining traditional craftsmanship and modern technology.
The idea of the theme is adapted from Journey to the West, which depicts the story of Sun Wukong’s birth in the Mountain of Flowers and Fruits, his ascendancy to the throne in Water Curtain Cave, as well as his thwarting of devils at the Mountain of Flames, his poise upon his Somersault Cloud, and his eventual fulfillment of all merits in attaining Buddhahood. Set atop a grand spinning disk, Sun Wukong embodies hope, agility, bravery, and compassion. The round disk represents wealth and perfection, while the spinning symbolizes the constant turning of the Dharma Wheel, bringing prosperity and peace.
Traveling on his Somersault Cloud and holding his Golden Staff, Sun Wukong not only radiates the energy of agility, but also exudes light. He symbolizes three forms of confidence: constantly forging ahead, bravery to confront steep obstacles, and overcoming adversities. May everyone be like Sun Wukong in the New Year, reaching their fullest potential, harmonizing to all situations, fulfilling all their wishes, and bring genuine happiness to the world.
