一九九二年五月十六日，國際佛光會世界總會成立，第一次會員代表大會在美國洛杉磯隆重舉行，來自歐、美、亞、非、澳五大洲的佛光人海會雲集，為佛教史寫下重要篇章。
國際佛光會創會會長星雲大師以「歡喜與融和」作為首次大會主題，希望國際佛光會把歡喜佈滿人間，將融和的理念佈滿世界。歷年來，除了在台灣舉辦會議之外，曾前往美國、加拿大、澳洲、法國、香港、日本舉辦大會。
自二○○二年起，總會長星雲大師邀請世界各地會員代表，改每兩年至台灣參加中華總會所承辦大會活動。期望讓全球六十餘個國家會員，跨越隔閡，彼此觀摩學習與經驗分享交流，使全球各地代表認識台灣，提升台灣國際能見度。
In May 16,1992 Buddha’s Light International Association World Headquarters was founded and held by the first BLIA World Headquarters General Conference in Los Angeles, USA. With this conference, members from Europe, the United States, Asia, Africa and Australia have gathered together, and it became an important chapter in Buddha History.
The first conference theme “Joy and Harmony” was written by the founder of BLIA, Master Hsing Yun. He hoped that BLIA will share the joy and harmony all across the world. Over the years, the conference was not only held in Taiwan but also held in the USA, Canada, Australia, France, Hong Kong and Japan.
Since year 2002, the President of BLIA, Master Hsing Yun had invited all the representatives from all over the world to participate the conference in Taiwan every two years. He expects that all the 60 members from the whole world will learn how to share and communicate in order to let the world know more about Taiwan.
