Ullambana Sangha’s Day Celebrations

The annual Ullambana Sangha’s Day Celebration was held once again on 10th August. Under a cascade of drum beats, 28 North and South Island BLIA Directors welcomed and escorted Venerable Abbess Manshin and other Venerables into the Main Shrine, where the Abbess led the congregation to recite the “Ullambana Sutra”. This was followed by an offering to the Buddha ceremony by over 300 devotees including all 13 sub-chapters and temple social groups.
Then North Island BLIA President Dolly Tsai and South Island President See Shen Li both gave speeches to thank Fo Guang Shan for establishing this temple in New Zealand. Under the leadership of the Abbess, Humanistic Buddhism is starting become localised, people’s characters are being uplifted through education, cultivation through diligence and quiet contemplation has uncover the actualisation of our Buddha nature. It is great indeed to have this temple and a high quality team to practice with.
Beside delicious food offerings for the Venerables, all sub-chapters have meticulously prepared many exciting and joyful performances. A singing performance of Fo Guang Shan’s song “Never return the ticket” by the Working Young Adult and Youth Chapter was especially captivating for the audiences. For it showed compassion, giving and a mind that does not forget our original aspirations.
Finally the Abbess spoke to everyone about strive for our endeavours through a heart of gratitude. Because gratitude, cherishing conditions, cherishing fortunes are all treasures for the mind. Gratitude can allow a person to understand giving and fortune, so it is also a source of wisdom. Furthermore, faith is able to give people confidence and gratitude. Right now society is living in a period of rapid technological advancement, where humans are living under a time of information explosion so they do not have enough time to turn and absorb these information. Hence contemplation and faith can help our self-development and unleash life’s energies. Then the Abbess once again encouraged everyone with Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s words “A life of trustworthiness is precious, but having faith is more invaluable”
Then a dignified Alms Giving Ceremony was held along the courtyard, where everyone took this precious opportunity to joyfully make an alms offering to the Venerables. This is in order to thank the Venerables for their tireless efforts toward propagating the Dharma and liberating sentient beings, as well as cultivating fields of merits for ourselves and our families.
