The University of British Columbia (UBC) is located on the west side of Vancouver in British Columbia Canada. The UBC Thunderbirds are one of the most successful Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) women's basketball programs of the past decade. At the helm is head coach Deb Huband who enters her sixteenth season behind the bench and is the longest serving head coach in team history. She is also the only UBC basketball coach, male or female, to have led the school to three CIS Championships.
UBC's three most recent CIS titles (2003-04, '05-06, '07-08) have come over the past seven seasons as Huband has established the T-Birds as a power in CIS women's basketball. Since winning the program's first title in 30 years in 2003-04, Huband's teams are a combined 112-38 (.747) in conference play. She has led the Thunderbirds to a CIS Top 10 ranking in each of those seasons, including multiple stints as the no. 1 ranked team in the nation.
Last season, the Thunderbirds finished with a 12-9 regular season record before losing a heartbreaking CW quarterfinal best-of-three series 2-1 to the Alberta Pandas on the road.
The 2010-11 UBC team returns almost every player from that roster and is poised to be among the top teams in Canada once again.
Lia St. Pierre, a third year guard from Moncton, N.B., was named a first-team Canada West all-star last season. Known for her extremely well rounded style of play, St. Pierre finished second on the team in scoring (13.2 points/game) and assists (3.5/game) and was third in rebounding (4.4/game). She was UBC's most accurate threat from this floor last season, finishing second in field goal percentage (49.2%), first in three-point shooting (50.0%), and first in free throw shooting (75.0%).
Post Zara Huntley led the T-Birds in scoring (13.9 points/game) and rebounding (7.2) last season, and the 6-foot-2 senior figures to be UBC's top post player again this season. Other returning starters including forward Alex Vieweg, who averaged 12.6 and 6.0 rebounds per game last season, and fifth-year guard Devan Lisson who is one of the emotional leaders of this squad. 6'3" third year forward Leigh Stansfield is ready to step into an expanded role and provide a physical presence in the paint at both ends of the floor.
UBC added a pair of standout recruits this year in Kris Young and Zana Williams. Young led her high school, Handsworth, to their second straight BC AAA Provincial High School Championship in 2009-10. A 6-foot-0 guard, Young averaged 20 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists for Handsworth and was named MVP of the 2010 AAA Provincial Championship. Williams is a transfer from Utah State (NCAA) who is originally from Vancouver, BC. A graduate of Kitsilano High School, she averaged 4 points, eight rebounds, and five assists in her senior year.
